A Malaysian satellite called RazakSAT has been successfully sent into orbit by the California-based Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX).

The Malaysian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Maximus Ongkili, said that RazakSAT, carried by a SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket, was launched from Omelek Island , 2,500 nautical miles to the southwest of Hawaii .

The 180-kg satellite, which was produced by the Astronautic Technology Sdn Bhd of Malaysia, is equipped with a high resolution camera that can be used for different purposes.

Operating in the Near Equatorial Orbit at a height of 685 km, the satellite will be able to observe weather conditions as it will cover 70 percent of ocean.

The satellite was named after Malaysia 's second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak, who was the late father of current Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

RazakSAT will be controlled from the Mission Control Station and Image Receiving and Processing Station in Malaysia./.
