A grand ceremony was held in the northern province of Bac Ninh on July 8 to mark the 100 th birthday anniversary of late former Party General Secretary Nguyen Van Cu (July 9, 1912).
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Huynh Dam were present at the ceremony.
Addressing the event, Trong said Nguyen Van Cu – who was Party General Secretary from 1938 to 1941 – was a talented young leader of Vietnam’s revolution, one of the outstanding students of President Ho Chi Minh, an eminent man of the nation, a resilient revolutionary soldier and an exemplary communist who devoted his life to struggling for the nation’s independence and freedom and the people’s happiness.
“This is an opportunity for the entire Party, people and army to better understand Cu’s life and his great contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the people,” said Trong.
He went on to say that Nguyen Van Cu had a creative ideological thinking and that he solved many practical and theoretical issues in a skillful manner and in commensuration with Vietnam ’s situation.
In 1939, in the context of the danger of the second world war where the French colonialists oppressed the democratic movement and elements called themselves revolutionaries opposed the Communist Party openly, Nguyen Van Cu, as the Party General Secretary, instructed an in-depth struggle in both theoretical and ideological fronts against these elements to consolidate the solidarity and unity in the Party.
Trong said Nguyen Van Cu made important sound decisions, contributing to the country’s revolutionary strategies in the historic moment.
Earlier, the Party, State, Government and National Assembly leaders offered incense at a memorial to Nguyen Van Cu in his homeland in Phu Khe commune, Tu Son town, Bac Ninh province.-VNA
