Can Tho became a member of the US RockefellerFoundation’s 100 Resilient Cities Network (100RC) in May 2016 and it willreceive necessary technical and financial assistance from this programme todevelop and implement the resilience strategy.
The strategy is built to address majorchallenges that Can Tho is encountering such as flood, sea level rise, anddrought caused by climate change, along with food security, diseases, consumerprice fluctuation, and water resources management.
It is hoped to help the city increase its resilienceagainst risks posed by natural calamities, social, economic and environmentalpressure, and climate change.
Director of the programme Amit Prothi describedCan Tho as the most dynamic locality in the Mekong Delta in terms ofsocio-economic development, adding that the city has quickly carried outactivities to build strategies to increase urban resilience capacity.
The 100RC programme will help Can Tho improvethe local living standards, facilitate business and investment, evaluate theimpacts of pressure and shocks to society, economics, culture and environmentin the middle and long term.
Vice Chairman of the municipal People’sCommittee Dao Anh Dung said Can Tho has established the 100RC programme officeand is making the assessment of factors affecting the local socio-economicdevelopment to define priority fields for the resilience strategy.
Can Tho is striving to become a growing andresponsible city in increasing resilience for the sustainable development of theMekong Delta in the future.-VN
