The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment together with relevant ministries and sectors have quickly completed Vietnam’s draft report on intended nationally-determined contributions (INDC) to coping with climate change.
The ministry, in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Germany’s development cooperation organization (GIZ), held a conference in Hanoi on May 18 to discuss the draft report.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha said the parties involved in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) were urged to develop the INDC report as soon as possible ahead of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 21) in Paris, France this year.
The report aims to contribute to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, promoting green growth, ensuring food and energy security, and keeping the global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius.
Maximum efforts are being exerted to involve Vietnam in discussions on the 2015 global agreement on climate change which is hoped to come into force in 2021 and will apply to all UNFCCC members, Ha said.
In its INDC report, Vietnam wants to supply initial information on the country’s adaptive activities to reduce CO2 emissions from 2021-2030.
With the support of the UNDP and GIZ, Vietnam has completed the INDC draft report which will be submitted to the Prime Minister for approval in June 2015.-VNA
