Yen Bai (VNA) – Mountain peaks in Nam Khat, Cao Pha, La Pan Tan and Mo De commune, Mu Cang Chai district, the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai have been covered with ice for the third time within only one month.
Travel has been hampered due to frost and heavy mist.
Temperature in the district fell under 3 degrees Celsius as a new strong cold spell hit northern region on February 5.
Mu Cang Chai district authorities have directed communes to quickly respond to protect local people, trees and animals from the cold and avoid further losses.
From the beginning of this winter, 50 cattle in the district were killed as a result of cold spells, including 10 buffalos, 7 cows and 32 calves.
The Office of the provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disasters Prevention and Control has recently asked northern and north central localities to keep themselves updated on developments of cold spells in order to timely alert local people, especially those in mountainous areas.
In a notice sent to the district and communal steering boards for natural disaster prevention and search and rescue on February 1, the office urged the agencies to intensify communication work to guide farming households in how to fortify breeding facilities, keep animals warm and reserve cattle feed during cold snaps.
At the same time, farmers should follow production schedule of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and protect crops from impacts of the severe weather, the office said.-VNA
