Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar’s parliament has expressed support for the government’s effort for becoming a member of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities and the Convention on Nuclear Safety, local media reported on August 26.

A military member of parliament (MP) has called on the government to encourage the usage of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as well as to issue a law on nuclear safety in the country sooner.

Another MP asserted the need to prevent the illegal trading of nuclear materials and nuclear facility accidents.

Meanwhile, other MPs acknowledged that nuclear energy, along with safety measures, should be considered as a driving force, helping the country to achieve socio-economic goals of sustainable developments. They also underlined the need for adequate electricity supply to lure more foreign investment.

Stressing the significance of the widely use of nuclear technology and nuclear safety, the parliament also reckoned that nuclear energy can be used to reduce greenhouse gas emission and negative effects of climate change.-VNA
