Myanmar sets up committee to solve interreligious violence

Hanoi (VNA) - The Myanmar Government has formed a high-level Emergency Management Central Committee tasked with preventing and mitigating interreligious violence in the country, according to a statement from the Myanmar President’s Office.

The committee, led by Myanmar Vice President Henry Van Thio, comprises ministers of defence and other union ministers, the attorney-general from state and divisional administrations and police commanders.

The committee will work directly with state, divisional and local authorities and civil society on strategies to pre-empt violence locally and to make use of media to spread awareness and to combat harmful instigations.

Myanmar has seen bouts of anti-Muslim religious violence across the country in recent years.

Muslims account for roughly 4 percent of Myanmar 's population of 60 million people.-VNA
