Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly ChairwomanNguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Standing Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong on September7 attended a rehearsal for activities of the 41st General Assemblyof the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-41), which will be held online aday later.

Speaking atthe event, Phong, who is also deputy head of the NationalSteering Committee on AIPA-41 and head of the AIPA-41 organising committee, saidpreparations have been basically completed with all contents and agenda meetingrequirements.

The Vietnamese legislature is assuming the role of AIPA Chair for the third time and will host the AIPA-41themed “Parliamentary Diplomacy for a Cohesiveand Responsive ASEAN Community” from September 8-10.

It will be the first time inhistory the AIPA General Assembly is held online amid the complicateddevelopments of COVID-19, showing the Vietnamese NA's activeness and flexibility as well as its contributions to reforming the operational mode of AIPA. 

The hosting of AIPA-41 and activities during the AIPA Chairmanship Year 2020 reflect the Vietnamese legislature's active, responsibleand practical contributions to the AIPA as well as make important contributions tostrengthening solidarity and guiding the organisation's common efforts to assist ASEAN inbuilding its Community, including performing key tasks of overcoming adverseimpacts of the pandemic, maintaining economic development, and ensuring socialwelfare for all citizens.

According to the organising committee, over 380 delegates will attend the AIPA-41 online via 43 locations./.

NA Standing Committee discusses continued VAT reduction

The Government proposed a two-percentage-point reduction in VAT - from 10% to 8% - on goods and services currently subject to the 10% rate. This excludes certain sectors such as telecommunications, finance, banking, securities, insurance, real estate, metals, mineral products (excluding coal), and goods and services subject to special consumption tax (excluding petrol). The proposed timeframe for the reduction is from July 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.

Vietnam, Laos push toward effective, sustainable trade relations

In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam-Laos trade reached 980.1 million USD, a surge of 105.5% compared to the same period in 2024. Exports from Vietnam valued at 346.4 million USD, representing soaring 138.6%. Meanwhile, imports from Laos rose by 91.1% to 633.6 million USD.
