Can Tho (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan attended the celebration of the 44th anniversary of the liberation of Can Tho city on April 26 during her trip to meet voters there.
The celebration was also for the 44th anniversary of the liberation of South Vietnam and National Reunification (April 30), the 133rd anniversary of International Labour Day, and the 129th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s birthday.
Vo Thanh Thong, Chairman of the People’s Committee of the Mekong delta city of Can Thor recalled the undaunted, heroic struggle of Can Tho’s people and soldiers for the city’s liberation and together with the nation to achieve national reunification in 1975.
Over the past 44 years, Can Tho’s authority and people have always stood united to surmount US war consequences, implement policies honouring those who rendered services to the nation, maintain political stability, and spur economic development for local people’s better living conditions, he said.
He called on local people to continue standing united in weathering challenges in the reform, bolstering the great unity bloc, strengthening the Party and political system, and achieving fast and sustainable economic development.
The effort aims to turn Can Tho into a wealthy and cultural city, working together with the nation to successfully implement industrialization and modernization, he said.
At the event, NA Chairwoman Ngan and Can Tho leaders awarded 30-year Party membership badges to eight revolutionary veterans. -VNA
