The National Assembly (NA)’s Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs should replicate good examples and practices to benefit ethnic minorities, said NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
Speaking at the committee’s congress in Hanoi on September 23 to review its 2011-2015 patriotic emulation movements and outline programmes for 2016-2020, Chairman Hung praised the committee’s achievements across education, life quality and infrastructure, all of which improved.
He also asked the committee staff to review and offer advice to the Party, NA and Government in devising policies targeting ethnic minorities.
According to Minister-Chairman of the committee Giang Seo Phu, the patriotic emulation movements helped change the face of ethnic minority-inhabited and mountainous regions in the past five years, with 98.6 percent of communes having roads for cars to their centres and 99.8 percent of communes gaining access to the national grid.
The poverty rate dropped by 3-4 percent annually, all children accessed primary education and illiteracy was eliminated. As many as 98.7 percent of communes had post offices with newspapers and books and all communes had health clinics.
The traditional cultures of ethnic minority groups were preserved and promoted. The political system was strengthened, and security and defence was maintained.-VNA
