NA Standing Committee opens 34th session

The 13th National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee convened its 34th session in Hanoi on January 19, with preparations for the upcoming 132nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-132) among the major focuses of the agenda.

NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said IPU-132, scheduled for March in Hanoi, will be the biggest diplomatic event ever hosted by Vietnam. It will be attended by delegates from more than 160 countries around the world.

During the session, the committee will carefully review preparations for IPU-132 to ensure its success, he noted.

He added that committee members will also consider major bills expected to be approved at the NA’s upcoming ninth session, as well as a number of personnel issues.

Following the top legislator’s opening speech, the committee scrutinised amendments to the Law on Military Service, such as the postponement of military service obligations for college students and the extension of the eligible age to 27.-VNA
