Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat, who is also Head of the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention, convened an urgent meeting in Hanoi on October 25 to get preparations in place before tropical Son Tinh arrives.
Son Tinh, the eighth storm to hit the region this year, is gaining speed on its way into the East Sea , but its route is unpredictable. At the same time, a cold mass is moving down towards the northern region. Combining the two factors, big rains of up to 400-500mm are predicted for the northern and central regions.
The Border Guard force reported that more than 27,700 ships at sea have been alerted to the danger. The ships have also been updated regularly on the position and the route of the storm so that they can seek safe shelter.
Minister Phat also urged localities to get plans ready to move residents from areas vulnerable to floods and landslides, as well as personnel and equipment for rescue activities.-VNA
