Vietnam will need more support from international experts to deal with environmental pollution, a senior official said on May 27.

Speaking at the Vietnam Environment Forum in HCM City , Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Van Duc welcomed a visiting delegation and said he was pleased they would help address environmental problems.

A group of eight US enterprises, laboratories and universities joined the forum to showcase models, technologies and applications from the US environmental industry that can benefit Vietnam .

The forum took a comprehensive look at key environmental and climate change issues, including the ways in which pollution was impacting Vietnamese seafood exports and how climate change was affecting daily life.

The World Bank estimates that Vietnam needs 2.5 billion USD per year to deal with environmental pollution because of its rapid industrialisation. With a coastline stretching for more that 3,000 kilometres, the country is also one of the world’s most vulnerable locations to the rise in sea levels.

“ Vietnam is still one of the most attractive locations in Asia for business and tourism,” Herb Cochran, executive director of Amcham Vietnam , said.

US and international companies are bullish on Vietnam ’s long term prospects and consider the country one of the most attractive emerging markets in the world, the forum heard.

The first forum was organised in Washington DC last May./.
