Vientiane (VNA) - Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Ba Hung visitedthe Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 28 to extend greetings on theoccasion of the 48th National Day of Laos (December 2, 1975-2023).    

Congratulating Laos on the great achievements that the Lao Party, Government,and people have achieved over the past 48 years, the diplomat told Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign MinisterSaleumsay Kommasit that Vietnam will help Laos fulfillits important responsibilities in ASEAN.

He expressed his joy that the special relationship betweenthe two countries has been increasingly strengthened over the recent times,especially in the fields of economics, investment, and trade, which haverecorded significant improvements compared to 2022 thanks to the joint effortsof the two sides.

High-ranking leaders of the two countries often affirm that in any difficultsituation, Vietnam and Laos will always stand side by side and continue tosupport each other so that the two countries can develop together and not lagbehind other countries, he said.

For his part, Kommasit agreed with the Vietnamese diplomat’s assessment of theresults achieved in the Laos - Vietnam cooperation in general and in economicand investment cooperation between the two countries in particular.

In 2023, the two countries have closely coordinated to resolve manydifficulties facing Vietnamese businesses in Laos, he said.

The Laoofficial took the occasion to thank the Party, State and people of Vietnam for supporting their Lao counterparts in all aspects, especially in the contextthat Laos is facing economic and financial difficulties and preparing toassume the 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship./.

NA Standing Committee discusses continued VAT reduction

The Government proposed a two-percentage-point reduction in VAT - from 10% to 8% - on goods and services currently subject to the 10% rate. This excludes certain sectors such as telecommunications, finance, banking, securities, insurance, real estate, metals, mineral products (excluding coal), and goods and services subject to special consumption tax (excluding petrol). The proposed timeframe for the reduction is from July 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.

Vietnam, Laos push toward effective, sustainable trade relations

In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam-Laos trade reached 980.1 million USD, a surge of 105.5% compared to the same period in 2024. Exports from Vietnam valued at 346.4 million USD, representing soaring 138.6%. Meanwhile, imports from Laos rose by 91.1% to 633.6 million USD.
