Hang Kia-Pa Co Nature Reserve, a sanctuary located in Mai Chau district, the northern province of Hoa Binh, is home to an abundant floral resource of great scientific significance.

Established in May 2005, Hang Kia-Pa Co has a vast acreage of over 7,000 hectares, of which more than 2,600 hectares are protected forests and over 4,400 are reserved for ecological restoration. Moreover, it has a buffer zone of more than 8,000 hectares.

Researchers have counted 1,051 plant species in the nature park, of which 17 species are listed in the Red Book of Vietnam, ten are listed as vulnerable and the remaining seven as endangered.

There are also five endemic plant species with the scientific names of Dyospyros choboensis, Cinnamomum balansac, Alniphyllum eberhardtii, Eurya tonkinensis and Melodinus annamensis.

The sanctuary is rich in medicinal plant species including Codonopsis javanica, Morinda offcinalis, Paris polyphylla and Smilaz grabla. It is home to various timber species of high economic value such as Fokienia hodginsii, Markhamia stipulatha and Garcinia faraec oides. In addition, there are many flower species belonging to the orchidaceae family.

The genetic wealth in Hang Kia-Pa Co is of great value to scientists, even though the forest only became known in the early 1980s when Prof. Phan Ke Loc discovered here two new coniferous species – the Taxus chinensis and Pinus Knagtungensis./.
