A group of American, Canadian, Singaporean and Vietnamese scientists have discovered a new species of narrow-mouthed frog in Vietnam’s southern province of Dong Nai and the Central Highland province of Gia Lai.
Biologist Phung My Trung, founder of the Vietnam Forest Creatures, said on September 23 that the species was scientifically named Kaloula Indochinensis as it was found mainly in three Indochinese countries of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
The discovery of the new bullfrog was published on Herpetologica, a scientific magazine on reptiles and amphibians, in September, 2013.
Kaloula Indochinensis can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: maximum snout-vent length 53.7 mm; finger tips expanded into wide discs; the majority of specimens with two subarticular tubercles on the fourth toe; inner and outer metatarsal tubercle slightly raised, inner metatarsal tubercles shorter than first toe; absence of dorsolateral stripe; and large, bright, orange-yellow axillary and inguinal spots.
This the third species of narrow-mouthed frog that has been found in Vietnam so far, according to Trung.-VNA
