New Year gathering hosted for adopted Vietnamese children in Italy

A virtual gathering was hosted by the Embassy of Vietnam in Italy on March 7 for adopted Vietnamese children on the occasion of the Lunar New Year.

Rome (VNA) – A virtual gathering was hosted bythe Embassy of Vietnam in Italy on March 7 for adopted Vietnamese children onthe occasion of the Lunar New Year.

The event was attended by Director General of theMinistry of Justice’s Department of Adoption Nguyen Thi Hao and adoptivefamilies of Vietnamese children from more than 70 locations across the Europeancountry.

Speaking at the gathering, Vietnamese Ambassador to ItalyNguyen Thi Bich Hue said with over 2,000 Vietnamese children adopted by Italiancouples so far, and these adoptive families have become a major part of theVietnamese community in Italy. They have contributed to strengthening therelations between the two countries, she said.

Many adoptive families in Italy want their Vietnamesechildren to know more about their roots, she continued, many Italian parents havealso encouraged the kids to learn and speak their mother tongue. This hasmotivated the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy to host the gathering, she added.

Hue also took the occasion to thank the adoptive familiesfor not only taking care of the Vietnamese children and providing them with areal home, but also giving an opportunity to preserve their traditionalculture.

Representing the adoptive Italian families of Vietnamesechildren, Cinzia Fabrocini said the gathering offers a good chance for thechildren to have a better understanding of their fatherland’s culture and forthe families to meet and talk about their shared interest in helping thechildren experience their birth culture.

Hao, for her part, said she hopes the Embassy of Vietnamand adoptive families in Italy will come up with more initiatives andactivities to bring the children closer to their homeland.

Vietnam always welcomes the children and their adoptiveparents to return to the country to explore Vietnamese culture and identity,she noted./.

The two gold medallists are Tran Trung Kien, a 12th grader from the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, who scored 169.25 points, and Nguyen Ngo Duc, a 12th grader from the Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in Nghe An province, who scored 151.05 points.

Vietnam among countries with high human development: UNDP report

According to the report, which evaluates human development progress based on the Human Development Index (HDI), tracking achievements in health, education and income, Vietnam’s HDI in 2023 reached 0.766, ranking 93rd out of 193 countries and territories. This marked a substantial leap from 0.499 in 1990, representing a 53.5% increase, a notable trajectory of growth over more than three decades.

Xuyen Viet Oil case: Appellate verdict announced, with six receiving reduced sentences

Specifically, the trial panel sentenced the mastermind of the case, Mai Thi Hong Hanh, ex-Director and Chairwoman of the Board of Members of Xuyen Viet Oil, to 11 years in prison for the crime of “giving bribes” and 17 years for “violating regulations on the management and use of State assets, causing loss and wastefulness.” The combined sentence is 28 years in prison, 2 years less than the first-instance verdict.
