Thanh Hoa (VNA) – The Ministry of Construction and authorities of the central province of Thanh Hoa announced on January 9 the adjustments to the planning of Nghi Son Economic Zone (EZ) until 2035, with a vision to 2050.
Accordingly, the total area under planning will increase nearly tenfold to 106,000ha, including almost 66,500ha of land on the mainland and islands and over 39,500ha of sea surface.
It will encompass the entire area of Tinh Gia district; Yen My, Cong Binh, and Cong Chinh communes of Nong Cong district; and Thanh Tan, Thanh Ky, and Yen Lac communes of Nhu Thanh district.
The expansion aims to turn Nghi Son into a multi-sector sea-based economic zone that focuses on heavy and basic industries. The zone will also be a modern industrial, service, and tourism complex with its centre being Nghi Son industrial city.
It will operate under special preferential mechanisms and is expected to become a development driving force of Thanh Hoa as well as the northern central region.
The Nghi Son EZ, established in 2006, is some 200km to the south of the capital city of Hanoi. It houses the Nghi Son seaport and the Nghi Son Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Complex – which is among the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.
It is currently an important gateway connecting northern Laos, northeastern Thailand, and neighbouring areas of Thanh Hoa with national and international shipping routes in the East Sea.
At the event to announce the expansion, Chairman of the Thanh Hoa People’s Committee Nguyen Dinh Xung said the adjustment to the EZ planning is critical for managing and developing the Nghi Son EZ, as well as the province.
He said authorities will press on with improving the local business climate, promoting investment in the Nghi Son EZ and industrial parks, and mobilising resources for building essential infrastructure facilities in the zone. –VNA
