Noi Bai airport expansion needs 3.5 billion VND

Hanoi (VNA) - The Civil AviationAuthority of Vietnam (CAAV) has said that it will need close to 80 trillion VND(3.5 billion USD) for the proposed expansion project of Noi Bai InternationalAirport.

The expansion project is being carried out in order to brace againstoverloading that is expected in just a few years.

At a recent meeting between the HanoiPeople’s Committee and the Ministry of Transport (MoT), the MoT was instructedto quickly complete planning and report to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc forpermission to deploy ground clearance in advance of the planned expansion.

Details of the plan were approved by the PMin 2008, and include site clearance, the building of new terminals, and a thirdrunway facing towards the south.

The plan for the site clearance will soonbe reported to the PM for approval. The main obstacle will be whether or notthe city can afford the current plans for clearance, or if instead it will haveto look elsewhere to expand the airport.

In the event that the city does not haveenough capital to account for the ground clearance under the approved plan,CAAV proposed to review and adjust planning based on existing land funds. Theyalso suggested using some military land in the north, said Nguyen Duy Lam, Directorof the MoT’s planning and investment department.

CAAV has also recommended hiring foreignconsultants to review the plans for the new airport, he said.

At the meeting, transport minister Nguyen VanThe stressed the importance of Noi Bai Airport as the central airport of thecountry and the front door from which to welcome domestic and internationaltourists.

He also requested CAAV study the plan foradjustment in order to ensure that the new airport will avoid the kind ofoverload endured in Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Noi Bai Airport now has a capacity of 25million passengers per year, with two terminals and two runways.

It is expected to receive 35 millionpassengers per year by 2030. - VNA

According to the document, at around 13:00 on July 11, an especially serious waterway traffic accident occurred about 200 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai Island. Passenger canoe AG-26751, carrying 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, capsized while travelling from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port, claiming 15 lives as of 15:00 the same day.

Search and rescue underway after tourist speedboat capsizes off Phu Quoc

According to the local authorities, the canoe operated by Ocean Pearl Island Company was transporting 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, including one captain, one mechanic, and one staff member, capsized while en route from May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port amid strong wave and wind condition. As a result, by 15:00 on July 11, the accident had claimed 15 lives.
