Northwest region’s biggest waste treatment plant inaugurated

The Lao Cai provincial People’s Committee and the French Development Agency (AFD) held a ceremony on October 5 to inaugurate a waste treatment and recycling factory, the largest of its kind in the northwest region, in Lao Cai city’s Dong Tuyen commune.

Located across 30 hectares, the factory was built with a total investment of 81.25 billion VND (3.57 million USD), 66.3 billion VND (2.95 million USD) of which came from AFD loans.

It is capable of treating 100-147 tonnes of waste per day. Waste is processed into organic and mineral fertilisers.

The factory is part of a project to improve rural and tourism infrastructure facilities in the locality.

Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Doan Van Huong requested the Lao Cai Urban Environment Company effectively operate the factory and coordinate closely with departments and agencies to improve local awareness of classifying rubbish and protecting the environment.-VNA

Three new plant species discovered in Nui Chua National Park

The newly discovered species are shrub-like smaller trees with floriferous branchlets called Sam cuong dai (Memecylon longipedunculatum), Diep ha chau Nui Chua (Nymphanthus adenophorus) and Long muc Nui Chua (Wrightia nuichuaensis). Their discovery was officially published in Phytotaxa, a leading international journal on plant taxonomy and biodiversity, on January 19, 2025.
