Almost 700 overseas Vietnamese living in 21 countries and territories on February 4 gathered at the annual new year meeting jointly held by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and the HCM City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs.
Addressing the ceremony, Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan praised contributions made by Vietnamese people living both in and outside the country to the socio-economic development of HCM City in particular and Vietnam in general.
He said the event is seen as an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese not only to enjoy the traditional festival but also to witness changes happening across the country. “HCM City will create favourable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to contribute to the country’s development,” he added.
At the meeting, leaders of HCM City Department of Construction also pledged to boost administrative reform, helping overseas Vietnamese return to their homeland, settle and invest here.
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Thai, a Frenchman of Vietnamese origin, stressed the significance of joint efforts in brainpower and finance by domestic and overseas Vietnamese to transform Vietnam into a developed country.
Foreign remittance sent to Vietnam through HCM City banks reached 2.36 billion USD in the first nine months of 2009. Overseas Vietnamese have raised charitable funds worth 12.2 billion VND.
The HCM City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs has granted 400 presents to Vietnamese expatriates in Cambodia on the occasion of the Lunar New Year./.
