Ottawa (VNA) – Overseas Vietnamese (OVs) in Canada have expressed their impression of the homeland’s achievements over the last 48 years, since the Liberation of the South and the National Reunification on April 30, 1975.

Talking to the Vietnam News Agency, Dinh Kim Nguyet, member of the executive council of the Canada - Vietnam Society in Vancouver city, said despite staying far from Vietnam, she has always kept a close watch on the homeland’s development.

She realised that the country has been developing strongly over the past 48 years as seen in civilised and beautiful new-style rural areas and modern high-rises in cities. The most important is that Vietnamese people have been living in peace and independence.

Commenting on the Party and State’s policies on OVs, Nguyet held that authorities and agencies at all levels have been implementing these policies well.

The expatriates in Canada are among those benefiting from Vietnam’s increasingly appropriate policies such as those on visa exemption, permanent residence cards, nationality regaining, and education on traditional culture for OVs.

Thanks to these policies, OVs now have further conditions to visit the homeland more frequently, she added.

Julie Nguyen, Director of the Canada - Vietnam Trade Council and member of the Canada - Vietnam Friendship Society, highlighted that over the last 48 years, the homeland has obtained a number of achievements beyond expectations in all spheres such as economy, society, health care, education - training, science - technology, as well as diplomacy and military.

In terms of diplomacy, Nguyen noted she is deeply impressed by Vietnam’s attainments since the start of the Doi moi (Renewal). The country is playing a growing role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia, and the world. Particularly, relations between Vietnam and Canada are becoming closer.

She also held that the implementation of the Party and State’s policies on OVs has helped the expatriates stay more cohesive with the homeland. More and more OVs, both old and young, have returned to Vietnam to visit their families and seek business and job opportunities.

That has proved the policies’ effectiveness in attracting OVs’ resources for national development and strengthening solidarity among the OV community, Nguyen added./.
