Philippines gets new Senate President

Senator Francis Escudero was elected as the new President of the Philippine Senate on May 20, replacing Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri who has just announced his resignation.

Hanoi (VNA) - Senator Francis Escudero was elected as the new President of the Philippine Senate on May 20, replacing Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri who has just announced his resignation.

During the plenary session held on the same day, Escudero received the support of all 24 members of the Senate, after being nominated as the next President.

In his speech after taking office, Escudero appreciated the results that Zubiri has made as Senate President over the past two years, and expressed his wish to continue receiving support from the former leader.

Zubiri assumed the Senate presidency in July 2022. He confirmed that he would step down before the aforementioned plenary session. Following Zubiri's decision, some senators leading Senate committees also tendered their resignations./.
