Vietnam’s attendance at the eventis to demonstrate the country’s support for the GMS mechanism and affirmthe role and position played by the country in promoting sub-regionaland regional links as well as the relations between Vietnam and othernations in the sub-region.
The country will takethe occasion to call for support from the international community forjoint efforts in the sustainable management and use of the Mekong Riverwater source and consolidate the Strategic Partnership with Thailand.
Vietnam has actively participated in GMS cooperationsince the mechanism was established in 1992. By June 2014, the countryjoined many GMS-funded projects on transport, electricity, health care,the environment, tourism, agriculture and urban development, as well asaround 130 technical assistance projects in the GMS framework.
After his arrival, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung joined the heads ofother delegations at a photo exhibition on the GMS and a welcome banquethosted by Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha.
The GMS cooperation programme consists of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia,Thailand, Myanmar and China’s Yunnan and Guangxi provinces.-VNA
