Singapore (VNA) - Jover Chew, former owner of Mobile Air, a mobile phone shop in Singapore’s Sim Lim Square, pledged guilty to 12 charges in court on November 16.

The 33-year-old man had faced 28 total charges for cheating 16,149 SGD (11,304 USD) over a 10-month period.

The charges include 26 counts of cheating, one of insulting behaviour and another of conspiring to cheat walk-in customers.

The prosecution has proposed a three-year jail term for Chew. However, the defence argued that a two-year sentence is enough as the defendant pledged to make full restitution to the customers he had duped.

District Judge Siva Shanmugam postponed Chew’s sentencing to November 30.

Last month, four of Chew’s former employees were jailed from four to 14 months for cheating customers between April 15 and October 27, 2014.

The case was brought to light last year as a video of a Vietnamese tourist begging Chew for a refund was spread on social media.

Worker Pham Van Thoai paid 950 USD for an IPhone at Mobile Air as a birthday gift to his girlfriend but was asked to fork out an additional 1,500 USD in warranty fees.-VNA
