Some external battery packs, commonly known as Power Banks, for cell phones are no longer allowed on board Thai Airways International flights for the safety reasons, according to the country's state carrier.
The new regulation, which permits on board only two cellphone battery packs not exceeding 32,000 mAh each, will be applied to both carry-on and checked luggage.
Power Banks are considered by Thai Airways as a hazardous item following reports of explosion of such devices on other international airlines that is caused by overheated lithium-ion batteries.
Spare phone battery is a dangerous device. If the lithium inside the device is heated, it can ignite, director of the airline’s security department Samat Pum-orn was quoted by Khao Sod newspaper as saying.
That why the ban is necessary after several incidents of portable cellphone battery chargers catching fire during flight, he said.-VNA
