Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Lawyers Association (VLA) must enhance legal consultancy and provide legal support for impoverished people, ethnic minorities and disadvantaged groups, President Tran Dai Quang said at a working session with the association in Hanoi on January 19.
President Quang also urged the VLA to renovate operation, proactively join in the making of laws and policies and recommend initiatives and projects to carry out the Party’s guidelines and the State’s laws.
The association must join hands with relevant judicial agencies to train and select candidates for judicial positions and jury members, helping complete the organisation and operation of judicial agencies, he said.
The President lauded the significant achievements of the VLA in the past years. With 63,000 members across the country, the association has actively participated in the popularization of law, provision of legal consultancy at grassroots level and prevention of law violations and crimes.
The association’s involvement in law building was a highlight in 2017, as it had chaired the drafting of the Law on Commercial Arbitration and the Law on Referendum, which were passed at the 12th and 13th National Assembly. It also organized various seminars to collect opinions on legal documents.
The VLA has made significant contributions to safeguarding national independence and sovereignty by organising many international seminars on the East Sea, thus helping raise public awareness of Vietnam’s policy and stance on the issue.-VNA
