Ha Nam (VNA) – Vietnam always views the UnitedNations as one of the priorities of its foreign policy and a leading partner, PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said.

He made the statement while receiving Under-Secretary-General of the UN ArmidaSalsiah Alisjahbana, who is also Executive Secretary of the UN Economic andSocial Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), in Ha Nam province on May12.

At the meeting on the sidelines of the UN Day ofVesak 2019 celebration, the PM welcomed the UN official’s participation in theevent, valuing her sentiments towards and attention to Vietnam.

He stressed that Vietnam attaches importance tothe UN’s central role in building the international legal system, maintainingpeace, preventing conflict, and responding to global challenges.

Highlighting bilateral ties for more than 40years, PM Phuc welcomed the assistance of UN agencies, including UNESCAP, forpromoting socio-economic development cooperation in regions and in eachcountry.

The host called for bolstering cooperationprogrammes between the two sides, asking UNESCAP to continue giving advice toVietnam during the making and implementation of socio-economic development policies,and help the country build capacity, develop human resources, realise theSustainable Development Goals, and cope with climate change.

The UN Under-Secretary-General and UNESCAPExecutive Secretary said she is impressed with the strong development ofVietnam over the past years, emphasising the wish to enhance relations betweenVietnam and UNESCAP.

She expressed her hope that the country willbring into play its role as the ASEAN Chair in 2020 to foster ASEAN-UNESCAPrelations.

The UN Day of Vesak 2019 celebration is beingheld at the Tam Chuc Buddhist Cultural Complex in the northern province of HaNam. It is themed “Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and SharedResponsibilities for Sustainable Societies”.

It is the third time the UN’s commemoration ofVesak has been held in Vietnam, after 2008 and 2014.-VNA

Vietnam, Italy agree on new cooperation directions

Both sides agreed to facilitate market access for key export products, and prioritise cooperation in investment attraction and technology transfer in emerging and strategic sectors such as new energy, renewable energy and automation, while continuing to strengthen existing cooperation in textiles, footwear, climate change response, electronics, culture and tourism.
