(Photo: VNA) An Giang (VNA) – The Vietnam Red Cross(VRC) in collaboration with the Procter & Gamble Vietnam held a ceremony tolaunch a programme “Clean drinking water for children” in Long Xuyen city, theMekong Delta province of An Giang on March 29 in response to World Water Day.
Addressing the event, VRC Vice President TranQuoc Hung said An Giang is one of the provinces most affected by waterpollution and suffering from severe water shortages.
Water shortage is the root cause of numeroussocial issues, such as diseases, infant and children mortality, raise drop-outrate, and pose difficulties for people in their daily life, Hung said.
Over the past two years, the clean water programme,funded by the Procter & Gamble Vietnam, has been launched in Nghe An, HaTinh, Quang Binh, Long An, An Giang, Dong Thap, benefiting over 110,000households.
In 2017, the company provided 800,000 P&GPurifier of Water packets for more than 60,000 households in the storm-affectedprovinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Tri and Nghe An.
The programme helps raise the awareness of theimportance of clean water for community health, thus reducing diseases andmortality caused by water pollution, he said.
Claude Zuhowski, the Global Disaster ReliefCoordinator at Procter & Gamble Vietnam said, over the past two years,the programme has helped many Vietnamese families have drinking water,particularly those severely affected by floods and natural disasters.
Procter & Gamble Vietnam pledges to makegreater efforts to expand the programme in all other Vietnamese localitiessuffering water shortages and vulnerable to natural disasters in the future,she said. -VNA
