Quang Nam works to improve endangered langurs’ habitat

The forest ranger department in the central province of Quang Nam has been assigned to strictly protect 30ha of remaining natural forests in Nui Thanh district’s Tam My Tay commune and crackdown on illegal poaching to save the endangered gray-shanked douc langur (pygathrix cinerea).

Quang Nam (VNA) – The forest ranger departmentin the central province of Quang Nam has been assigned to strictly protect 30haof remaining natural forests in Nui Thanh district’s Tam My Tay commune andcrackdown on illegal poaching to save the endangered gray-shanked douc langur(pygathrix cinerea).

There are about 50 langurs living in the area. The animal islisted on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUNC) Red List asone of the world’s 25 Most Critically Endangered primates, and only foundliving in Vietnam.

Local authorities have also requested relevant agencies tocomplete a conservation project targeting the endemic species. According to theproject, between now and 2028, the province is set to spend 134 billion VND (5.78million USD) on the work. The funding is sourced from the local budget anddonations of travel agencies and international organisations.

Apart from guarding the remaining 30ha of natural forestsacross Hon Do, Hon Ong, Duong Bong, Duong Ban Lau mountains, by 2028, Quang Namwill change at least 150ha of production forests into specialised ones toexpand the langur’s habitat.  

According to experts from the Frankfurt Zoological Society’sVietnam Primate Conservation Programme, some 1,000 gray-shanked doucs have beenfound in forests of five provinces, including Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh,Kon Tum and Gia Lai.

Rare primate handed over to Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park

Criminal proceedings launched against case of illegal keeping, trading of 104 wild animals

They recorded a total of 104 wild animals, comprising 92 African spurred tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) of various sizes, six Red Lories (Eos rubra) and six Green-cheeked Parakeets (Pyrrhura molinae). Authorities said the animals are subject to management under Vietnam's forestry legal regulations and are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Rare wild animals released into natural habitat in Dak Lak

Among them are two species classified under Group IB of Vietnam's protected wildlife list, namely the Bengal slow loris (Nycticebus bengalensis) and the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica). Both are endangered forest species protected under Vietnamese law and are prohibited from commercial exploitation or use.
