Quang Ninh starts to connect Van Don island with grid

The northern province of Quang Ninh on April 19 kicked off a project to bring power to island communes of its Van Don district.

Thework, which is expected to be completed by 2015, will be undertaken bythe Electricity of Vietnam and the Northern Power Corporation, whichsent representatives to the launching ceremony.

The beneficiaries include Quan Lan, Minh Chau, Ban Sen, Ngọc Vung and Thang Loi communes.

Over311 billion VND is poured into the project, of which 100 billion VNDcomes from the provincial budget, 100 billion VND from the Electricityof Vietnam and the rest of 112 billion VND from the Northern PowerCorporation.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’sCommittee Do Thong said the project boasts immense political, social andeconomical meanings, helping realise the development of the Van DonSpecial Economic Zone in the future.

Van Don was selected by the Vietnamese government to grow into a special administrative and economic zone.

Itis the biggest island in the north of Vietnam and still largelyuntapped. The island has easy access to other economic and politicalcentres in Asia as it is located in a corridor linking China and ASEAN.

A Van Don special administrative and economic zone is seenas the driving force of economic growth in Quang Ninh, contributing tothe locality’s transition of an economy based on agriculture to one oftourism services.

The province outlined preparatory steps.By 2015, it will complete the legal framework, administrative structureand select strategic investors for key projects. From 2016 to 2025, itwill finish the infrastructure system and promote tourism andentertainment projects. And, from 2026 to 2030, the province is tocomplete the zone and make it effectively operational.-VNA

The two gold medallists are Tran Trung Kien, a 12th grader from the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, who scored 169.25 points, and Nguyen Ngo Duc, a 12th grader from the Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in Nghe An province, who scored 151.05 points.

Vietnam among countries with high human development: UNDP report

According to the report, which evaluates human development progress based on the Human Development Index (HDI), tracking achievements in health, education and income, Vietnam’s HDI in 2023 reached 0.766, ranking 93rd out of 193 countries and territories. This marked a substantial leap from 0.499 in 1990, representing a 53.5% increase, a notable trajectory of growth over more than three decades.

Xuyen Viet Oil case: Appellate verdict announced, with six receiving reduced sentences

Specifically, the trial panel sentenced the mastermind of the case, Mai Thi Hong Hanh, ex-Director and Chairwoman of the Board of Members of Xuyen Viet Oil, to 11 years in prison for the crime of “giving bribes” and 17 years for “violating regulations on the management and use of State assets, causing loss and wastefulness.” The combined sentence is 28 years in prison, 2 years less than the first-instance verdict.
