The Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (CSCAP) convened the second session of its research group on Water Resources Security in Phnom Penh , Cambodia on July 18.
The meeting evaluated the current use and management of water resources of related nations as well as reviewed international legal issues and the role of international institutions relating to water resource management and use.
Host representative Prince Norodom Sirivutdh spoke highly of the initiative to set up the research group on Water Resources Security and the success of the first session in Hanoi last March.
At the meeting, participants stressed the importance of the mechanism on cooperation and partnerships on sustainable development of water resource security.
They agreed upon the importance of cooperating and sharing information in the region and made suggestions on the structure of cooperative institutions, sharing and strengthening international and regional regulations, along with contributions from the private sector, as well as mechanisms to prevent conflicts on water resources./.
