Robots successfully assisted the doctors at the National Hospital ofPaediatrics's Centre of Paediatrics Endoscopic Surgery to conductsurgeries on ten patients since the centre became operational four weeksago.

Of the ten operated patients, 17-month-old Hai Bang fromnorthern Thai Binh province is recovering well after doctors conductedrobot-assisted surgery on her kidney early this week, said her mother,Nguyen Thi Thu Hien.

"After hearing about the robotic surgery, Iwas very worried at first. However, I now quite trust the new technologybecause my daughter is in a stable condition", she noted.

Inanother case, a child from the Hanoi's Hoang Mai district, who sufferedfrom large intestine infection, had undergone a two-hour roboticoperation and is now on the way to recovery.

The patient'smother, Huynh Thi Kim Dung remarked that the child was able to eat anddrink normally just a day after the operation, adding that her familynow completely trusted the new technology.

Pham Duy Hien, deputyhead of the hospital's Department of Surgery, claimed that roboticsurgery had helped to overcome the shortcomings of normal endoscopicsurgery, thanks to the robots' flexible joints.

"Patients undergoing robotic operation recover faster than those having open surgery", Hien said.

Accordingto Hospital Director Le Thanh Hai, one advantage of using the method isthat the surgeon does not have to be physically present, but can beanywhere in the world, leading to the possibility of remote surgery.

Haialso added that robotically assisted surgery was developed to overcomethe limitations of minimally invasive surgery and to enhance thecapabilities of surgeons performing open surgery.

"The centre'sfoundation will help offer international standard medical services toVietnamese children", he emphasised, adding that the cost of roboticsurgery in foreign countries is estimated to be US$30,000, but inVietnam, it costs only from 50-70 million VND (2,000-3,500 USD).

Roboticsurgery, computer-assisted surgery, and robotically-assisted surgeryare all terms deployed for technological developments that use roboticsystems to assist surgical procedures.
