A Russian reporter, Sergey Afonin, has authored an article to praise the 35th anniversary of the Liberation of South Vietnam (April 30), a historic moment that led to national reunification.

The article calls the event that ended the Ho Chi Minh Campaign a great victory in the Vietnam’s history.

The article, published on Tassovetsa monthly magazine of ITAR-TASS Russian News Agency on April 12, is illustrated by a photo taken by a battlefield correspondent Tran Mai Huong, who is now Vietnam News Agency General Director.

The photo depicts tanks and armoured vehicles of the liberation forces emerging and shooting into the Independence Palace, the residence of the first elected President of Republic of South Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem.

In his article, Sergey Afonin, who is also an expert on Vietnam, reviewed the establishment and development of the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (NFLSV) on a trip to Ben Hai river at 17 parallel, a demarcation line between the South and North of Vietnam, after the war against the French colonialists ended.

He recounts an incident where he was present while a Russian Ambassador to Thailand presented his credentials to the NFLSV’s government, even as bombs from the B-52s of the American imperialists rained down, as well as interviews in the field that commanders of the liberation forces granted him.

The article portrays Vietnam as an attractive destination, saying that Vietnamese people have the right to be proud of their tradition of heroic struggle under the sound leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. It also acknowledges the significant support by the former Soviet Union and Russia for Vietnam ’s wars in the past as well as its cause of national construction at present, contributing to boosting the friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries.
