The second Vietnam-US defense policy dialogue has yielded good results and proved the two countries’ close bilateral relations.
The affirmation was made by the co-chairs of the dialogue, Deputy Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Robert Scher, in an interview granted to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in the US immediately after the end of the dialogue in Washington on Sept. 19.
Lt. Gen. Vinh said that the Vietnamese side had a frank discussion with the US side about issues of mutual concern, including common perceptions and differences.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the US Department of Defense and the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense has proved the transparency of bilateral defence cooperation as well as affirmed Vietnam’s independence and self-reliance in defence cooperation in the interest of the two countries, and for peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
The prominent point of this dialogue is the US strong affirmation to cooperate and assist Vietnam in overcoming the aftermath of the war, especially the clearance of unexploded ordnance, said Vinh.
The Vietnamese side affirmed its willingness to assist and cooperate with the US in seeking for Missing-in-Action (MIA) servicemen in the war, he added.
At the dialogue, Vietnam handed over six dossiers on bilateral searching activities to the US, said Vinh.
For his part, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Scher said the two sides focused on key issues of cooperation between the two defense ministries as well as regional and global issues.
Scher highlighted the signing of the MoU that articulates what is being done and will be done in the future.
He said the two sides will continue to work on issues such as maritime security, search and rescue, peacekeeping operations, defense engagements, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
Under the two defense ministries’ agreement, Vietnam and the US have held annual defense policy dialogue since 2010. The dialogue is intended to help the two defense ministries promote cooperation, raise mutual trust and understanding, contributing to peace and stability in the region. Last year’s dialogue took place in Hanoi./.
