Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 (SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024), the first large-scale international semiconductor exhibition to be held in Vietnam, slated for November 7-8 with the theme "Elevating Vietnam in the Global Semiconductor Supply Chain," is expected to offer significant opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to connect with some of the world's leading technology giants.
Venue for semiconductor sharks
At a press conference on October 23, Vu Quoc Huy, Director of the National Innovation Centre (NIC), shared details about the upcoming SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024. The event, organised in collaboration with the Global Semiconductor Alliance (SEMI), is set to become a landmark occasion for both the national semiconductor industry and the wider Southeast Asian region.
This will be an important and meaningful event for the NIC, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, and SEMI, as it reflects their collective efforts to boost Vietnam’s semiconductor industry and its role within the global and Southeast Asian semiconductor supply chains, said Huy.
The semiconductor industry, often regarded as the "core" of electronics manufacturing, is responsible for producing microchips and components that power complex electronic products. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and amid shifting geopolitical dynamics, many companies have been diversifying their supply chains, seeking to tap into the skilled workforce and competitive costs offered by countries in Asia, including Vietnam.
Huy revealed that SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024 is expected to attract around 5,000 delegates and feature 100 exhibitor booths, showcasing products and solutions from major global tech giants like GlobalFoundries, Intel, Amkor, Coherent, Infineon, Lam Research, Marvell, Qorvo, Cadence, Synopsys, Siemens, Tektronix, and local firms such as FPT.
This exhibition will mark a pivotal step forward in Vietnam's journey to build a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem. It is not just an opportunity for Vietnam to assert its position on the global industrial map but also opens up new avenues for businesses, investors, and students, Huy added.
The event aims to facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, and networking opportunities within the semiconductor ecosystem. It will also provide valuable insights to help policymakers, businesses, and stakeholders understand Vietnam's potential in semiconductor manufacturing, electronics, and technology innovation.
At SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024, Vietnamese companies will have a chance to explore and engage with the semiconductor value chain, from assembly and testing to design and chip fabrication. Key highlights of the exhibition will include sessions on promoting the business environment, investment opportunities, and the development of Vietnam’s semiconductor industry. Additionally, there will be discussions on global technology trends, particularly the use of artificial intelligence in chip design.
An important feature of the event will be a dialogue session with the National Semiconductor Development Steering Committee, led by the Minister of Planning and Investment, which aims to boost Vietnam’s semiconductor ecosystem and workforce. The exhibition will also serve as a platform for connecting international and local businesses, creating new partnerships and opportunities in the sector.
In addition, the event will feature initiatives to support the development of talent, with scholarship information available for students pursuing semiconductor-related fields.
Will Vietnam’s semiconductor market reach 31.39 billion USD by 2029?
Linda Tan, President of SEMI Southeast Asia, highlighted the impressive growth prospects for Vietnam's semiconductor market. According to data from Statista, the Vietnamese semiconductor market is projected to reach 31.39 billion USD by 2029, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.48% from 2024 to 2029.
This growth is a testament to Vietnam’s strong foundation and competitive advantages, as well as the government’s commitment to building a robust and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem by 2050, said Tan. With strategic investment and international cooperation, Vietnam is poised to become a key player in the global semiconductor industry, she held.
Another key feature of SEMIExpo 2024 will be the "SEMI TECH Zoomers Bootcamp," which aims to nurture the next generation of semiconductor professionals. The programme will involve nearly 100 students from nine local universities and will provide hands-on experience and exposure to leading semiconductor manufacturing facilities. Outstanding students will also have the opportunity to participate in the TECH Zoomer Bootcamp in Singapore in 2025.
Tan also noted that SEMI is committed to inspiring students to pursue careers in STEM fields, with over 200 students from technology universities expected to attend the TalentCONNECT networking event during SEMIExpo.
SEMI will continue to support Vietnam's ambitions to strengthen its semiconductor presence through its global initiatives, she stated./.
