The reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in agriculture was thetopic of a seminar in Hanoi on September 29 which was jointly heldby the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the UNFood and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
MARDDeputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh emphasised that it is important to come upwith solutions to mitigating CO2 emission in agriculture which producesapproximately 43 percent of the nation’s GHG emissions.
He said the MARD has set up a working group in charge of pushingNationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) to reduce GHG emissionin agriculture.
The group is working in theframework of the three-year project entitled “Enhancing NAMA readiness:building capacity in integrated food and energy systems in Vietnamtowards in agriculture” which was launched in March this year.
The UN One Plan, the joint framework between the United Nations andthe Vietnamese Government, will provide 700,000 USD to the project whilethe remaining will be funded by the Vietnamese government.
The project will organise training courses for policy makers and experts in the sector on developing NAMA plans.
A FAO representative laid stress on stronger coordination betweensectors and strong will of managers for achieving the goal of reducingGHG emissions.
The agriculture sector aims toreduce CO2 emissions by 5.7 million tonnes by 2020, approximately 10percent of total greenhouse gas emissions.-VNA
