Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of Construction will begin inspecting all dilapidated buildings in urban areas from 2017, the ministry revealed on June 10.

The ministry’s statistics show that Vietnam has thousands of old residential buildings in very poor condition. The capital city of Hanoi is home to more than 1,500 which stand from 2-5 stories tall, most of them were constructed between 1960 and 1980 while some were even built before 1954.

The Ministry of Construction has developed a standard process for structural safety assessment of residential buildings and public works across the nation.

The inspection of old buildings to verify their ages andonditions is a complicated job that takes time due to a lack of technical documents and a completed set of standards for the work, noted Nguyen Manh Ha, head of the State Authority for Construction Quality Inspection.

The ministry said that it will continue to review the assessment process and provide training for inspection authorities in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Can Tho.-VNA
