Six planes from three countries have joined the search and rescue mission in the area 250km southwest of Vietnam’s Ca Mau cape, where a missing Malaysia Airlines jet likely descended, according to Director of the Civil Aviation Authority Lai Xuan Thanh on March 8.
They include three from Malaysia , two from Vietnam and one from Singapore .
According to him, two AN 26 planes and one vessel from the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre were on their way. Another seven aircraft and nine ships are on a standby.
Communication with the plane was lost as it was flying over Singapore ’s flight information region (FIR). If an accident occurred, it is very likely that the aircraft fell within Vietnam ’s FIR, Thanh said.
He added that Vietnam has zoned off 10,000 sq.km for the search to take place, while Malaysia has cleared an area of 20,000 sq.km.
On board the Malaysian Airlines passenger Boeing 777-200 were 227 passengers and 12 crew members from 13 countries, including 158 Chinese people.-VNA
