Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat on December 11 ordered the southern central provinces of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan to be on full alert for typhoon Hagupit, which is likely to make landfall in the southern central area on the night of the same day.
He inspected the localities’ preparations and asked their authorities to promptly evacuate residents in vulnerable areas, tighten control over vessels, and step up communications to improve people’s disaster-awareness knowledge.
Khanh Hoa authorities reported that over 8,350 people in storm-prone and lowland areas are being moved to safer places.
By 12pm of December 11, Ninh Thuan called on 2,730 ships with 16,913 workers on board to take shelter.
The same day, the Steering Board for Flood and Storm Prevention and Search and Rescue of southern Ben Tre province sent an urgent notice demanding relevant agencies to brace for the typhoon.
Nearly 1,500 vehicles operating at sea were notified of the typhoon with more than 700 vessels taking refuge, it said.
Hagupit, the fifth tropical storm in the East Sea this year, is predicted to weaken into a tropical low pressure area after making landfall in the south central region.
Earlier, it swept across the Philippines, claiming at least 27 lives.-VNA
