State President Truong Tan Sang visited the first-ever exhibition of photos taken by the US’s Associated Press (AP) war photojournalists in Hanoi on June 15, a reminder of the war and the value of peace and independence.

Over 40 years ago, the AP sent a contingent of photojournalists to Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City, to cover the Vietnam War against the US.

Of their collections, over 50 photos have been chosen to be displayed at the exhibition hall at 45 Trang Tien in downtown Hanoi, calling the public attention to a true account of the war.

Among the highlights is a photo of monk Thich Quang Duc on fire captured by Malcolm Browne in 1963 and the iconic “Napalm Girl” by Nick Ut in 1972.

The AP has won six Pulitzer prizes for its Vietnam War coverage, four of which are from the photo category and are on display.

Following the exhibition, all exhibits will be gifted to the Vietnam Military History Museum.

The event is part of celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the normalisation of Vietnam–US ties and is to foster mutual understanding between the two peoples.-VNA
