Hanoi (VNA) –
Storm Matmo, which swept through the south central coast on October 30, has left one unaccounted for and 14 injured, all in Quang Ngai province, as of 8:00 am on November 1.

According to the Standing Office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, the storm, the fifth of its kind entering the East Sea this year,  also destroyed more than 2,100 houses and submerged 200 others in Binh Dinh. 

More than 210 hectares of rice and 5,300 hectares of other crops in Phu Yen were damaged while over 72 hectares of aquatic breeding areas were destroyed.

In Binh Dinh, 2,000 metres of sea embankment were eroded. 

The storm also destroyed more than 6,800 metres of canals in Binh Dinh and Phu Yen.

Coastal erosions were seen in localities of Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Khanh Hoa provinces.

Many localities in Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen suffered from blackouts, while 35 schools in these provinces were damaged.

At an online meeting on November 1 on dealing with the storm’s aftermaths, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development requested affected localities to report their losses and damage, and propose the kind of support they need, while taking measures to help local people restore their normal life./.
