Sustainable coffee production project benefits Lam Dong farmers

LamDong (VNA) - The VietnamSustainable Agriculture Transformation project (VnSAT) has proven effective inthe Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, helping enhance coffee production effectivenessin the locality and change local farmers’ awareness of sustainable coffee farming.

Pham Trung Dung, Director of the project’s management board said theproject focuses on training coffee production techniques to local farmers, and buildingsustainable cultivation and production models

Local farmers have been supported in building infrastructure facilities andpurchasing equipment for cultivation and production.

In the last three years, training courses on cultivation technique were offeredto some 10,000 farmer households in Lam Dong.

Hundredsof sustainable re-planting and production models and water-saving irrigationmodels for coffee were formed.

Attention was also paid to developing cooperatives, aiming to promote productionand consumption links.

So far, the project has provided more than 33 billion VND (over 1.4 millionUSD) for developing infrastructure facilities, rural roads and storehouses inLam Ha and Di Linh districts, as well as and Loc Phat and Loc Thanh communes inBao Loc city.

VnSAT’s management board said it will continue to implement sub-projects on infrastructure,production device and water-saving irrigation in Bao Lam, Lam Ha and Di Linhdistricts, and Bao Loc city.

The sustainable coffee cultivation areain the Central Highlands region reached 22,000 ha, exceeding the set target,with profit growth 4.5 percent.

VnSAT began in Decemberin 2015 in eight Mekong Delta localities: An Giang, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang,Long An, Soc Trang and Tien Giang, and Can Tho; and the five Central Highlandsprovinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum and Lam Dong.

The project is expectedto help increase the number of agricultural products with export value worthmore than 1 billion USD.

In the Central Highlandsregion, the VnSAT project provided advanced technologies to about 63,000farmers for use on 69,000 ha.

The total added value isexpected to be around 48 million USD to 50 million USD for each year from 2015to 2020.-VNA

Vietravel Airlines to add new route serving Lunar New Year travel peak

Can Tho–Ca Mau expressway fully opens from January 19

The new section, together with the Can Tho–Hau Giang segment that has been operating smoothly since late December last year, has completed the entire 110.85-km route. With total investment exceeding 27.52 trillion VND (1.04 billion USD), the four-lane expressway is built to modern standards and serves as a key transport artery linking major economic and political centres, industrial zones and seaports in the southwestern region.
