The former Soviet Union ’s victory in the Second World War (1941-45) made it easier for the Vietnamese people to stage their August Revolution and gain independence, construct a new life and advance towards socialism.

This was stated by Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giap, Director of the Institute of International Relations at the Ho Chi Minh National Administration & Politics Academy at an international symposium to discuss the historical facts and reflect on present-day events, in Moscow on May 24 and 25.

Giap stressed that the symposium would focus on historical values and as well as the part the former Soviet Union played in the defeat of fascism and protected the values of humankind and peace-lovers around the world.

The event, hosted by the Communist Party of Russia (KPRF) was attended by 27 delegations from communist parties and international organisations from 24 countries around the world.

The President of the KPRF’s Central Committee, Ghenadi Ziuganov, then gave a presentation on the role of the Soviet Communist Party during World War II.

Recalling developments during the second World War, Ziuganov confirmed the Soviet Communist Party’s prominent role in leading the Soviet people to victory, defending the Soviet State and helping to rescue the world from a genocidal catastrophe.

He also emphasised the important role played by the International Communist Movement in the fight against fascism, citing the sizable contributions by communists in China , Vietnam and other Asian countries.

The Russian communist pointed out that at present, there are forces which seek ways of distorting and twisting the truths of history, denying the communists’ triumphs and the role they played in defeating fascism and called on communists everywhere to argue against such distortions.

He suggested that the truth about World War II should be taught in schools and universities and broadcast on the mass media and the internet.

The symposium heard presentations by delegates from Azerbaijan , Greece , China and many other countries, which all emphasised the Soviet Union ’s role and the communists’ contributions to the defeat of fascism./.
