Ta Dung Nature Reserve becomes National Park

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved the upgrade of Ta Dung Nature Reserve in the Central Highlands of Dak Nong into a National Park.

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved theupgrade of Ta Dung Nature Reserve in the Central Highlands of Dak Nong into a NationalPark.

The move aims to protect forest resources, bio-systems and genetic resources ofendangered and rare species, and to support scientific studies andenvironmental education.

Spanning nearly 20,940 hectares in Dak Som commune Dak Glong district, the parkhas three zones: strict protection zone, ecological restoration zone andadministrative-service zone.

The park is expected to reduce greenhouse emissions, increase forest coverage,ensure environmental security, mitigate land erosion and floods, stabiliseproduction and improve local livelihoods.

The PM asked the provincial People’s Committee to manage the park and directinvestment projects to develop the site.

Ta Dung is famous for photogenic forests with some 2,000 kinds of fauna andflora. There are 62 animals listed in Vietnam’s Red Book and 248 others in theInternational Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.

It also features the 2,000 metre Ta Dung mountain, the highest peak in Dak Nongprovince. -VNA

Nghe An residents voluntarily hand over rare pangolins for conservation

On May 11, the Quy Chau Forest Protection Department, along with local police and authorities, took in a critically endangered pangolin, handed over by a resident. The animal was discovered a day earlier by Thai Doan Tuan, from Viet Huong village in Quy Chau commune, after it wandered into his garden. Recognising it as a protected Sunda pangolin, he contacted authorities for assistance.
