Malaysia remains one of Vietnam’s key trading partners in ASEAN and globally. However, Vietnam’s exports have lagged behind imports, resulting in a trade deficit of 5.67 billion USD with Malaysia in 2025 and nearly 4 billion USD in the first six months of 2026.

The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) is promoting business cooperation between Malaysia and Vietnam to achieve 76 billion RM (18 billion USD) in bilateral trade by 2025, Malaysian news agency Bernama has reported.

Malaysia could become one of the biggest export markets in ASEAN for Vietnam, especially in the post-pandemic period, a city official said at a meeting in HCM City on July 16.

Chances for trade and investment cooperation with Singapore and Malaysia under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) were highlighted at a workshop held in the southern province of Long An on August 30.

Vietnam and Malaysia are targeting to raise bilateral trade to 25 billion USD by 2025.

Malaysia recorded 1.62 trillion MYR (about 410 billion USD) in trade turnover in the first 11 months of 2017, much higher than the sum of 1.49 trillion MYR in 2016, said Second International Trade and Industry Minister Ong Ka Chuan on January 18.

Trade and investment ties between Vietnam and Malaysia are expected to enjoy a new driving force created by the recently established Malaysia-Vietnam Chamber of Commerce (MVCC).
