Several key Thai government websites were brought down late on September 30, believed to be a form of protest against the government’s plan to introduce a single Internet gateway for the country.

The websites of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology went offline at 10:00 PM following a distributed-denial-of-service attack, the government’s cyber security experts said, adding that the shutdown has violated Thailand’s computer crime act.

Access was restored on the morning of October 1.

The single Internet gateway plan is being introduced by the military government in an attempt to increase censorship and prevent negative comments online, but it has sparked a growing wave of public protest in the country.-VNA
