Bangkok (VNA) – Thai police have stepped up security at crowded locations such as tourism sites, shopping centres and airports, following a warning by the US Embassy in Bangkok of possible attacks by the self-claimed Islamic State (IS) militant group.

Talking to the press , Deputy national police chief General Sriwara Ransibhramanakul said that he has ordered police units to increase security measures against possible terror incidents or sabotage.

Strengthened security and tighter supervision were also required at border gates, he said.

Police said that information received from a source at the US embassy warned of a possible plot to attack shopping malls and transportation hubs in Bangkok.

The warning came only two months after secret information provided by the Russian police to Thai counterparts was disclosed. The information said that 1 0 IS fighters from Syria had arrived in Thailand to conduct terrorism attacks targeting European tourists.-VNA
