Illustrative image (Source: nationmultimedia.com) Bangkok (VNA) – Thai rice exporters have recently called on the government to curb the rise of baht to protect export, after the currency hit four-year high in late 2017.
Chairman of the Thai Rice Exporters’ Association Charoen Laothamatas said the stronger baht makes the price of Thai rice unattractively high compared with the prices of competitors such as Vietnam.
The association also warned that Thailand could lose Africa market because it bought stockpiled rice in mass from the Thai government, but the supply has run out while new crops are expensive, making it hard for consumption here.
Thailand’s baht stood at 31.35 per USD, a record since November 2013. In January 2018, it rose nearly 4 percent after a 9 percent increase in 2017.-VNA
