Thailand deploys 100,000 police to keep referendum security

Bangkok (VNA) – About 100,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure security for the upcoming referendum in Thailand on the new draft constitution, said Royal Thai Police deputy spokesman Pol Maj-Gen Piyapan Pingmuang on July 25.

He noted that Royal Police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaichinda has instructed police nationwide to step up security measures and urged the Election Commission (EC) to mobilise more officials to prevent illegal activities at district and provincial levels.

According to the spokesman, Thai police are investigating seven suspected cases of destroying lists of eligible voters in Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Khon Kaen, Satun, Supan Buri, Rayong, and Phichit provinces.-VNA
